The value of using submetering for energy renovation projects under the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP – Option A or B) lies in the ability to isolate and accurately measure the energy savings of specific Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs).
By using submeters (or “shadow meters”) to track specific equipment, systems, or zones, project owners can gain precise, real-time data, reducing uncertainty in savings calculations compared to using whole-facility data.
In the case where 1-min or 15-min energy data are utilized, important conclusions can be drawn for use in Demand Response (DR) programs and Digital Twin simulations.
